Channing, William Ellery
(1780–1842)
   Theologian.
   Channing was born in Newport, Rhode Island, and was educated at Harvard University. In 1803 he was appointed pastor of the Federal Street Congregational Church of Boston and in 1809, in a famous sermon, he preached the major doctrines of Unitarianism. He denied the doctrine of the Trinity, the divinity of Christ, the total depravity of human beings and any substitutionary theory of atonement. He was committed to both pacifism and the abolition of slavery, but he is primarily remembered as the most important American Unitarian theologian. He himself never wished to belong to a distinct sect and always maintained that he ‘desired to escape the narrow walls of a particular church’. None the less he was the moving spirit behind the 1820 Berry Street Conference for liberal-minded ministers, which led to the setting up of the American Unitarian Association.
